Dates are synonymous with Ramadan as Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, used to break his fast with a few dates before offering maghrib (sunset) prayer. It is reported that the Prophet said “When any of you breaks his fasting he should eat dates cause dates are blessing, if you do not find dates then drink water cause water is purifying.” Modern science has proven that dates are part of a healthy diet as they contain a variety of vitamins, sugar, fiber, fat and proteins. Dates also contain calcium, iron and other essential nutrients. Dates and date palms have been mentioned in the Quran 20 times. “We produce gardens of dates and grapes for you, in which there are many fruits for you and from which you eat. (Quran- 23:19)The Prophet referred to the date palm when he said, “Among trees, there is a tree like a Muslim. Its leaves do not fall.” Muslims also believe that Mary ate dates when she was going to give birth to Jesus, peace be upon him. “Shake the trunk of the palm towards you and fresh, ripe dates will drop down onto you. Eat and drink and delight your eyes…” (Quran- 19:23-26). American Muslim iftar spreads may be as varied as the countries their families originate from. However, dates will be a staple part of the menu regardless of the other items prepared.
