The month of Ramadan is the most blessed month in the year for more than 1 billion Muslims across the globe. The month of fasting is directly linked to the Holy Quran as it was in this month, that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, first received the Divine Revelation through Angel Gabriel. The Prophet committed the Quran to memory. He used to recite the entire Quran with Angel Gabriel each Ramadan, and repeated it twice in the last Ramadan before he passed away. The Quran was compiled in to a book form during the Caliphate of Othman. Following the tradition of the Prophet, Muslims listen to an entire reading of the Quran in special taraweeh prayers at night in the masjid. Many also try to complete an individual reading of the Quran in this month. With digital Quran players and downloadable verses and translations of the Quran on iPods and MP3 files, keeping in touch with the Divine Message is easier than ever before. In Chicago, more than 100 masjids and Islamic Centers will be holding taraweeh prayers each night beginning on August 21.
