Scholarship opportunities for Muslim students

Ysra Zarzour

Knowledge is power, as the saying goes. It is truly a beneficial and necessary asset, and it’s worth mentioning that Islam encourages seeking knowledge from the cradle to the grave. It is for this reason many young Muslims are choosing to obtain bachelor degrees, while some go on to earn their masters as well. However, as many students know, a college education, as empowering as it is, does not come cheap. Students shouldn’t let that set them back though, as there are several scholarships available that pertain to Muslim students:

Islamic Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit organization that offers not one, but several different scholarships, depending on your major. Students at the undergraduate and graduate level of schooling and majoring in humanities, social sciences, liberal arts and law are highly eligible for a multitude of scholarships. The complete list of possible applications can be found here at

Dr. Abdulmunim A. Shakir Scholarship is a scholarship offered by The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) every year to students entering their freshman year of college. They may major in any field and still be applicable, and the scholarship simply requires a completed application form, a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Each year 20 Muslim students are selected. More information can be found here at

The Fadel Educational Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization that supports the education of Muslim U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Applications for their scholarship become available every February, and are awarded on a need and merit basis to students who are pursuing bachelors or masters degrees. A small application signaling your intention to complete a full application is also required. More information can be found at

Dollar-A-Day Scholarship Fund Inc. is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Muslim youth in the U.S., especially at the college and professional level. This organization has an annual academic scholarship available to advanced degree students, although undergraduate students are still encouraged to apply. New applications come out at the start of each year, and the amount of money awarded based on the funds garnered by the organization that year. More information can be found at
